How Strong a Vacuum Do I Need from My BrandTech Vacuum Pumps?

When determining if BrandTech Vacuum Pumps can meet your specific application needs, it is important to compare the required vacuum level for the task at hand, to the pump’s maximum vacuum level. The strongest level of vacuum a pump can achieve should exceed your application requirements. For example, a vacuum pump with an ultimate vacuum of 80 mbar is capable of vacuum levels between atmospheric pressure and 80 mbar and is ideal for any application requiring 80 mbar or less of vacuum.

What About the Flow Rate of my BrandTech Vacuum Pumps?

BrandTech Vacuum Pumps' flow rates are the volume of gas or vapor they can move per unit of time. The flow rate required for your particular application is determined by a number of factors, including the application’s vapor volume, time requirements, and system leak. If a pump cannot generate enough flow at the desired vacuum level, the application will proceed much more slowly than desired or necessary or, in extreme cases, not at all. The specified flow rate for most laboratory vacuum pumps reflects the pump’s capacity at or near atmospheric pressure, not at a specific vacuum level. Pumps with the same maximum vacuum can differ in their flow rate at working vacuum levels.

Should I Choose a Rotary Vane (Oil) or Diaphragm (Oil-Free) BrandTech Vacuum Pumps?

The two types of BrandTech Vacuum Pumps most commonly used in labs to generate vacuums are rotary vane and diaphragm pumps. Rotary vane pumps are made mainly of machined steel and use rotating vanes to isolate and "sweep" volumes of gas to generate vacuum. These moving parts of BrandTech Vacuum Pumps require the use of low vapor pressure oil in the flow path (the “path” the vapor takes as it passes through the pump) to seal the isolated gas volumes and lubricate the moving parts. Since the oil is necessarily in the flow-path, when a rotary vane pump used for evaporative or sublimation applications, the oil will be contaminated by vapors from the application. Much of this oil contamination happens at the outlet of the pump, where the vapor passing through the pump hits the "brick wall" of atmospheric pressure, where it condenses. This contamination can thin the oil, reducing its lubrication qualities, or change its pH, speeding up corrosion of the pump components. The contaminated oil can also “mist” from the pump outlet and pollute the lab. As a result, using a rotary vane pump in these circumstances requires further safety measures:

  • Cold traps to protect BrandTech Vacuum Pumps.
  • Oil mist filters to reduce contamination of the lab environment from the vapor from BrandTech Vacuum Pumps.
  • Careful and frequent monitoring of oil quality and quantity.
  • Frequent oil changes to prevent premature failure of BrandTech Vacuum Pumps.
